Huawei, LG pitch tents in growing Firefox OS camp

Huawei, LG set to join growing Firefox OS camp

While we doubt Huawei or LG were singing "I'm late, I'm late for a very important date..." at MWC this year, in hindsight they likely would have enjoyed sharing what arguably became the biggest deal of this show. Unfortunately the two handsets we caught up with at Telefonica's booth were behind glass and no amount of reason was going to see them sprung. Obviously the Huawei offering isn't close to ready as it is running on an Android set, though, the LG while powered off certainly looked like a complete housing featuring the requisite home button. So it would seem Firefox OS has become a waiting game as we sit and tally what other manufacturers feel it's safe to jump on board. Short gallery of the two devices under glass are just below.

Significant Features of Joomla VirtueMart Development | SeaShore ...

Although it functions with both Joomla and Mambo but Joomla VirtueMart setup is the most admired and hugely accepted combination.
Joomla-VirtueMart
In today?s world of internet when businesses are trying to offer best possible browsing and shopping experience to their customers while keeping the costs low, Joomla VirtueMart addresses all their specific needs, allowing them to build a highly functional and easy-to-operate ecommerce store.

The combination offers a range of numerous other significant features and benefits, helping you achieve a wonderful online store. Joomla VirtueMart development requires special expertise if you?re aiming to get a fully-functional and feature packed customized website.

Downloading and installing Joomla may seem easier but customization needs thorough knowledge and experience. Similarly, integrating VirtueMart into a Joomla website requires technical knowledge. In order to make this happen, you will have to hire expert Joomla VirtueMart developers.

Recruiting resources in-house is an expensive proposition. But fortunately, there is another way out. You can simply outsource the job to a web development company and minimize the risk and cost of development. If the scope of your project is more or you?re looking to make changes in it every now and then or keep it evolving all through, it?s ideal to hire Joomla VirtueMart developers offshore. They work as an extension to your in-house IT team from a remote location according to your time zone. Moreover, you save up to 50-60 percent of the total cost of development.

However, if you?re skeptical about hiring resources from an offshore development company, you can consider looking for a company that is based in US only but has an offshore development center in countries like India. This way, you not only ensure localized communication but also cost-effective development.

Nasheed leaves Indian High Commission, states ... - Minivan News

Nasheed leaves Indian High Commission, states ?desire for stability? thumbnail

Additional reporting by Mohamed Naahii, Leah Malone

Former President Mohamed Nasheed left the Indian High Commission on Saturday afternoon after seeking ?refuge? from police seeking to present him to the Hulhumale Magistrate Court.

Nasheed has maintained that the charges against him ? of detaining the Chief Criminal Court Judge during his final days in office ? are a politically-motivated effort to prevent him contesting the 2013 elections.

After 11 consecutive days inside the High Commission, Nasheed emerged and was greeted by approximately 600 Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) supporters at a press conference in the Dharubaaruge exhibition hall, across the street from the party?s former protest site at Usfasgandu.

Nasheed emphasised his desire for stability to be restored, following eight days of continuous protests by the MDP, dozens of police arrests, and a violent attack on a Maldivian journalist.

?I have been in the Indian High Commission for the last 11 days and now I have come out with the understanding that I will be able to conduct my peaceful political activities and my normal social life.

?I hope and I believe that this will bring much stability to the very volatile nature of Maldivian politics and our society today. I hope that all the stakeholders all actors will bear in mind that we will have to have a peaceful election and to do that we will all have to forego whatever we have to.

?It is always my wish that democracy is consolidated in the Maldives. It is always my wish that we have a more prosperous life,? Nasheed stated.

MDP supporters were heard cheering during the press conference following Nasheed?s statements.

Nasheed was greeted with joyful applause, chants of ?Anni?, and was surrounded by a throng of supporters as he exited the building to give a speech near Usfasgandu.

Nasheed claimed his decision to seek refuge in the Indian High Commission was not pre-planned during his recent visit to the country.

?We are living in a very vibrant period of time. We are never certain when we will get arrested or when we will be released from custody. This is not something faced by myself alone. But the biggest attacks are targeted against me,? he said.

?I believe the danger posed towards me is far graver than others. I have faced more attacks than any other person possible could have faced. But we all should understand that our safety lies at the hands of almighty Allah. We maintain that protection by seeking courage from each other,? he added.

The former President also contended that leaders of all political parties should get the opportunity to compete in the upcoming presidential elections peacefully.

?I came out of the Indian High Commission because I believe I can now carry out political activities and that I too could take part in social activities in the country. My wish has always been that Maldives remains a democracy,? he said.

?I thank the Indian people and its High Commission. I do also thank the people of the Maldives and supporters of MDP. What is now important is that we win the next presidential elections,? he said.

Nasheed repeated his statement that the MDP would contest in the upcoming presidential elections and re-establish its government in the country.

?I believe that the presidential elections will not proceed without all political party leaders being able to fairly compete in it,? he said.

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has said it will boycott the elections should its presidential candidate Nasheed ? who was been elected through a direct vote from its members ? be barred from contesting in the elections.

Nasheed also expressed sadness over the brutal attack against Raajje TV News Head Ibrahim ?Aswad? Waheed last night, who is currently fighting for his life in a Sri Lankan hospital.

?I take part in the grieving of the brutal attack on Aswaad. Attacks on journalists hinder our development [as a society]. That is an attack on us, the people. I really do hope that we let go of such vindictive acts and focus on our development and that all of us can compete in the elections,? he said..

Highlighting on the flaws within the judiciary, Nasheed said that he believed that judicial reforms could be ?achieved through dialogue and negotiations?.

He also said that delaying his ongoing trial ?would not compromise anyone?s rights? and that it was important the next presidential election was ?inclusive?.

His short speech was followed by an MDP march around Male? in support of Nasheed, calling on citizens to support ?independent news? following the?attack violent on a Raajje TV journalist in the early hours of Saturday (February 23).

Speaking to the Press Trust of India, President?s Office Spokesperson Masood Imad said ?the government ?welcomes? the development, and that there was no arrest warrant against Nasheed at present.

?I am happy that the longest meeting in the world has ended. We were formally told by the High Commission on the first day that Nasheed had come into the Mission for a meeting and will be out once it is over,? Masood told PTI.

Indian diplomatic efforts

The Indian High Commission expressed hope that Nasheed ?will again resume his social and political life.?

?India would be happy to support all efforts to create favourable conditions for free, fair, credible and inclusive Presidential elections in September 2013 that can contribute to durable peace, stability and prosperity in Maldives and the region,? the High Commission said in a statement.

Nasheed?s departure from the protected diplomatic territory ? which prevented police from acting on two court warrants for his arrest ? follows a series of meetings by Joint Secretary of India?s Ministry of External Affairs Shri Harsh Vardhan Shringla.

?These interactions have provided some forward movement and the team continues to work further on the available inputs so that the matter could be resolved to satisfaction,? the High Commission stated on Friday, despite various reports in Indian media that President Mohamed Waheed had been unable to meet with the delegation due to his ?very busy schedule?.

No information has yet emerged as to whether Nasheed?s exit from the High Commission is related to a specific commitment from the government or Nasheed?s political opponents not to pursue charges against him, ahead of the September 7 presidential elections.

The saga has however led to widespread international backing, including from the UN, US, UK, Commonwealth and EU, that the presidential elections be ?inclusive? and that all parties are able to put forward the candidates of their choice in the upcoming elections.

Prime suspect sought in Las Vegas shooting, crash

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Police are seeking a 26-year-old man as the prime suspect in last week's pre-dawn shooting and crash on the Las Vegas Strip that killed three people and injured several others

The black SUV used as a getaway car was found Saturday as police named Ammar Harris in connection with the shooting and six-vehicle chain-reaction carnage Thursday on the neon-lit boulevard near the Bellagio, Caesars Palace, Bally's and Flamingo resorts,

An aspiring rapper who was driving a Maserati was shot to death, while two people in a taxi died in the crash.

"His location is unknown," police Capt. Chris Jones said of Harris, who sometimes goes by the name Ammar Asim Faruq Harris. Police say he has been arrested for working as a pimp.

Police released a photo that was taken when Harris was arrested last year on pandering, kidnapping, sexual assault and coercion charges. The disposition of that case was not immediately known.

The photo shows Harris with tattoos on his right cheek and words on his neck above an image that appeared to depict an owl with blackened eyes. Jones warned that Harris should be considered armed and dangerous.

Police had been searching for the black Range Rover, with blackout windows and distinctive black rims, since it was last seen speeding from the shooting. It was located at an apartment complex just a couple of blocks east of the neon-lit boulevard, and was impounded as evidence, Jones said.

The shooting killed Kenneth Wayne Cherry Jr., who was driving the dark gray Maserati that was peppered by gunfire from the SUV. Taxi driver Michael Boldon and passenger Sandra Sutton-Wasmund, of Maple Valley, Wash., died when the Maserati hit their taxi, which exploded in flames.

Boldon, 62, was a family man who moved from Michigan to Las Vegas. Sutton-Wasmund, 48, was a businesswoman and mother of three.

A passenger in the Maserati was wounded in the arm and four people from four other vehicles were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The Maserati passenger was cooperating with investigators. His name hasn't been made public.

The shocking chain of events had family members and friends in Las Vegas, California, Michigan and Washington trying to grasp the blink-of-an-eye finality of it all.

"My son was a good boy," Kenneth Cherry Sr. told reporters Saturday in a news conference convened by Las Vegas lawyers Vicki Greco and Robert Beckett.

Beckett said they wanted to respond to rumors that the 27-year-old son ? who produced a rap video using the name Kenny Clutch ? was a gangster and a troublemaker. The attorneys had represented his son, and now represent his estate and the family.

"My son was a victim just like the two people in that taxi," Kenneth Cherry Sr. said. "Trouble found him. The people in the taxicab, trouble found them."

Court records show Cherry had no criminal cases or convictions in Las Vegas, and police said there was no record of arrests.

The Clark County coroner determined that Kenny Cherry died of at least one gunshot to the chest. Boldon and Sutton-Wasmund died of injuries in the crash. All three deaths were ruled homicides.

Police say the shooting appeared to stem from an argument at the valet area of the upscale Aria resort-casino about a block south of the crash scene. The shooting happened after a night featuring Morocco-born rapper French Montana at Aria nightclub Haze.

Cherry's parents live in Emeryville, Calif., and the father said his son's body would be taken back to Oakland. He said his son started a music career there and was recognized by other rappers within a West Coast hip-hop strain called hyphy.

Cherry wasn't well-known in wider music circles, according to Chuck Creekmur, CEO of AllHipHop.com.

Kenny Clutch's YouTube music video, "Stay Schemin," shows scenes of hotels along the Strip as he sings about paying $120,000 for his Maserati.

"One mistake change lives all in one night," he raps in one verse.

Kenneth Cherry Sr., who said he runs a cellphone business, said he helped his son make payments on the Maserati. He said he last spoke to him on Wednesday, when they talked about the high cost of the son's cellphone use.

Cherry Sr. described his son as an entrepreneur but didn't say how he made money or if he had jobs other than his music production.

Boldon's family in Las Vegas was struggling to cope with his death, said Tehran Boldon, the taxi driver's younger brother.

Boldon's sister, Carolyn Jean Trimble, said Boldon was a father, a grandfather and a car race enthusiast who drove a Mercedes when he wasn't in a cab. He owned a clothing store in Detroit and worked at a car dealership, his sister said, and drove taxis after moving to Las Vegas about 1? years ago.

The irony that a man with a taste for beautiful cars was killed by a sports car wasn't lost on Trimble.

"He would be tickled to death: 'Damn, of all things, a Maserati hit me, took me out like that,'" she said. "I'm happy he didn't suffer."

In Washington, Sutton-Wasmund co-owned a dress shop, said Debbie Tvedt, the office manager for a Maple Valley plumbing company that Sutton-Wasmund started with her husband, James Wasmund. Sutton-Wasmund was in Las Vegas attending a trade show with her business partner.

"It's a big loss," Tvedt said in a telephone interview with AP.

The Maple Valley-Black Diamond Chamber of Commerce website said Sutton-Wasmund was a board member from 2004 to 2011 before becoming a marketing representative.

A phone message left for James Wasmund was not immediately returned.

The famously glowing, always-open Las Vegas Strip was closed for some 15 hours after the crash. Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. Eric Kemmer recalled a similarly long closure after the 1996 drive-by slaying of rapper Tupac Shakur.

That shooting ? involving assailants opening fire on Shakur's luxury sedan from a vehicle on Flamingo Road ? happened about a block away from Thursday's crash.

The Shakur killing has never been solved.

Former JP President Aaron Broussard to be sentenced Monday

NEW ORLEANS - On recent trips to the federal courthouse in downtown New Orleans, Aaron Broussard has remained upbeat, even joking with a tourist about his new found status as a convicted felon.

Monday, Judge Hayden Head will sentence Broussard for his role in payroll fraud and kickback schemes while Jefferson Parish President.

He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery and theft.

Eyewitness News Legal Analyst Chick Foret says it is hard to predict how much time Broussard will get behind bars. He says Broussard could be disappointed by the sentence.

"I don't think he's going to get the 18 months to two-year to three-year sentence that he might anticipate because he has cancer," said Foret. "I think the more likely sentence is somewhere between five and seven years."

A federal prosecutor told Judge Head Broussard "accepted responsibility" for his crimes, and he assisted in the prosecution of his case by timely notifying authorities his intention to plead guilty. Prosecutors said Broussard is entitled to a slight reduction in sentence for conspiracy to commit bribery and theft.

Broussard's former wife Karen Parker and former Jefferson Parish Attorney Tom Wilkinson will also be sentenced on Monday.

Both of them pleaded guilty to knowing about a federal crime and not reporting it.

"I would think that Miss Parker may well get probation," said Foret. "I would think that Mr. Wilkinson would get somewhere between six months and 18 months."

Jefferson Parish Council President Elton Lagasse says an internal audit shows Broussard's schemes cost the parish more than $500,000.

"I think there was some trust there that we had with that administration that maybe we shouldn't of had," said Lagasse.

He also says the council has since passed new laws designed to crack down on corruption.

They include an ordinance requiring council approval for employee raises of more than five percent.

Parish officials must now report all sources of income and outside businesses every year.

Internal auditor and inspector general positions were created.

Contractors must also disclose contributions to parish elected officials.

"We're going to be under some severe scrutiny from now on," said Lagasse. "To tell you this will never happen again, I'm not going to say that won't happen, but I will say it's a lot harder to do now because there's a check and balance now that you didn't have before."

Eyewitness News Political Analyst and Gambit Weekly Editor Clancy DuBos says the moral of the Broussard story for voters is to elect good people and make sure they stay good.

"The bottom line is you can have all the rules and laws in the world, if you don't have good people in office they're going to break those rules," said DuBos. "The temptation and perhaps the opportunity to do wrong and enrich yourself is too great for some people."

The Broussard sentencing is expected to begin at 10 Monday morning.

Rand Paul: Not Running for President Except to Win, America Ready for Libertarian Republican

not the fatherFox News

Senator Rand Paul talked about his potential presidential aspirations on Fox News Sunday today, saying he won?t make an actual decision until next year. Via Politico:

"I would absolutely not run unless it were to win," the Kentucky Republican said on "Fox News Sunday." "Points have been made, and we we will continue to make points. But I think the country is really ready for the narrative coming -- the Libertarian Republican narrative."

Voters want a "different face," he said.

In order to expand the party's reach, Paul believes the GOP should embrace candidates who are willing to push a less aggressive foreign policy, comprehensive immigration reform and less punitive measures on first offenders of non-violent drug possession.

"We're doing fine in congressional seats, but we're becoming less and less of a national party," Paul said.

Paul garnered 10 percent in a recent PPP poll on 2016 (pdf), just below Chris Christie, Jeb Bush and Mike Huckabee, almost four years out from the election.

LG finally reveals Optimus G Pro specs, price, availability

LG Optimus G Pro

Android Central at Mobile World Congress

LG technically officially announced the Optimus G Pro for the Korean market a few days ago, but now we've got all of the gritty details on the device. As we saw before, the new device will sport a full HD 1080x1920 5.5-inch (that's 440 ppi) display, with seemingly tiny bezels. Under that screen will be a 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage (SDcard expandable) and a removable 3,140mAh battery with wireless charging support. We're looking at 13MP rear and 2MP front cameras, LTE connectivity and shipping software of Android 4.1.2 with LG's latest UX customizations.

The press release indicates availability of "next week" for the Korean market, but nothing regarding international availability. Pricing is quoted at 968,000 won, which with a quick currency exchange calculation is just shy of $900 (although that's not always indicative of eventual U.S. pricing). The Optimus G Pro will be on display at MWC in just a week, so you can bet we'll have our hands on one soon.

Thorp to take provost position at Washington University in St. Louis

Chancellor Holden Thorp won?t return to the University?s faculty after he resigns ? he will become provost at Washington University in St. Louis.

Thorp, who announced his plans to resign in September after a series of scandals plagued his tenure, will become the chief academic officer at a private university with less than half of UNC?s enrollment on July 1.

Thorp said he was sought out a few months ago by a search firm hired by Washington University. Though he originally said he was looking forward to teaching and researching at UNC, Thorp said the new position is a good fit.

?I realized I know a lot about higher education and the inner workings of universities ? and that it would be fun to try to apply all that at a new place,? Thorp said in an interview Sunday.

Thorp?s announcement that he would resign roughly coincided with a similar announcement from the university?s provost Edward S. Macias, who had served as chief academic officer for 25 years.

Washington University Chancellor Mark Wrighton made the decision to hire Thorp after consulting with the search firm and an advisory committee.

Thorp?s leadership was challenged throughout a series of scandals during the past two years, which began with an NCAA investigation into the football program and led to multiple examinations of UNC?s academics.

But Wrighton said in an interview that Thorp?s trials will make him even more of an asset.

?I do know there of course have been some challenges at the University of North Carolina, but I believe he worked with a high degree of integrity and effectiveness,? Wrighton said. ?And I believe that the experiences he?s had have been ones that may prove valuable as we may face complex challenges in the future.?

?We do not have Division I intercollegiate athletics, but we?re a very complicated institution, just as UNC is.?

Aside from their interactions at meetings of the Association of American Universities, Wrighton said that he and Thorp have much in common, as they are both chemists and received their Ph.D.s at the California Institute of Technology.

?I?m much older, but I?ve known of him for a long time, and in the last several years, we?ve interacted not knowing we would have this opportunity to work together,? Wrighton said.

Thorp will also hold an endowed professorship in the departments of chemistry and medicine at Washington University, and said though his administrative duties will come first, he hopes to be able to do more research and teaching as his time there progresses.

Wrighton said as provost and chief academic officer, Thorp will be responsible for working with the deans of the university?s seven schools, will assist in defining academic programs and will be the person Wrighton ? who has been chancellor at Washington University for 18 years ? turns to for leadership.

?He will be able to serve when I?m not on campus, and in every aspect he will be the principal leader of our academic affairs,? Wrighton said.

But Thorp said there are things he will miss about the University he has been a part of for more than 25 years.

?I think it?s hard in one way because I have so many friends and connections and love all the people at UNC so much, but it?s also exciting to think of doing all these things at a new place,? Thorp said.

Thorp said that his wife, Patti Thorp, insisted that they could not go somewhere whose athletic teams played against the Tar Heels and that they will still be cheering for UNC on TV, in addition to the Division III Washington University Bears.

Another change for Thorp will be working at a private university, which will propose some different challenges, he said. But he said Washington University does a great job with financial aid and handling student debt.

Thorp added he will work on expanding graduate education at the school, and bolstering the chemistry program. He will also bring his experience with innovation and entrepreneurship, which Wrighton said is on the school?s agenda.

Thorp said he?s looking forward to making his mark at Washington University.

?It?s a great honor to be in an institution that is as strong as Washington University, but they are like any other place, there are things we can work on,? he said.

Chubby Checker sues HP over penis size app

Chubby Checker, the musician best known for his 1960 hit recording of "The Twist," is suing HP over a novelty app for Palm OS of the same name that claims to check the size of your "chubby." The sum sought is a mind-boggling half a billion dollars.

The rock-and-roll star, whose real name is Ernest Evans, filed the suit this week in a Florida federal court, simultaneously releasing a statement describing the reasoning behind the suit. Willie Gary, an attorney who has already chalked up a number of large-sum legal wins, says that the app has caused "irreparable damage" to Evans' reputation and legacy.

"Chubby Checker" was a $0.99 app originally made for Palm OS (which was abandoned in 2009 in favor of Palm's WebOS). It allowed users to input the size of a male subject's feet and receive, in return, an estimation of the size of that guy's genitalia. For entertainment purposes only, of course.

Such novelty apps are now commonplace, naturally, as is the understanding that such apps are developed by companies or developers totally independent of the larger corporations that offer them in App Stores, such as Apple or Google. Takedown requests for apps that abuse copyrights or trademarks are also commonplace, although going after damages is uncommon ? and damages of this scale are unheard-of.

The suit and supporting documents can be read here (PDF), and readers can form their own opinions as to its merit. But factor this in: Though the $500 million requested in the suit includes compensation for damage to reputation and other measures, the app itself was a dud. According to records at unofficial Palm app archival site House of Palm, it was downloaded only 84 times, potentially netting the parent company a grand total of around $25.

HP, which bought Palm in 2010 and is thus the primary target of the lawsuit, issued the following statement to NBC: "The application was not created by HP or Palm. It was removed in September 2012 and is no longer on any Palm or HP hosted web site."

One thing seems certain: If no one thought of "Chubby Checker" as a euphemism for this type of thing before, they certainly will after this.

Fla. mayor's push for bilingual city gets rebuffed

DORAL, Fla. (AP) ? In many parts of Miami, Spanish is used as frequently ? or more often ? than English.

That's certainly case in the neighboring suburb of Doral, where an influx of immigrants from Latin America have transformed an idle community near the city's airport into flourishing neighborhood with cafeterias and businesses echoing the tastes and sounds of home.

Enter any restaurant here and customers are usually greeted first in Spanish. Some complain it can be hard to find anyone who speaks perfect English.

But when Doral's mayor tried to make Spanish the official second language on Wednesday, he was rebuffed by every council member and numerous constituents. And it wasn't from the small group of non-Hispanic residents who live here. It was largely from immigrants themselves.

"Our parents and some of us that are up here came from Latin America and other countries knowing that the United States has English as the language," Councilwoman Ana Maria Rodriguez said. "We came here knowing we had to adapt to the language of this country."

Nationwide, the Latino population has ballooned and the number of Spanish-language services has grown as a result. An estimated 34.5 million people in the United States speak Spanish at home ? about 10 percent of the population ? and everyone from small businesses and retail chains to politicians have taken note. When Florida Sen. Marco Rubio delivered the Republican response to the president's State of the Union address on Tuesday, he gave speeches in both languages.

But few cities have responded by declaring themselves officially bilingual. Far more states, and politicians, have adopted English-only policies. That has been reaffirmed in the recent immigration reform debate, with both Democrats and Republicans supporting English as a requirement for citizenship.

"Real reform means establishing a responsible pathway to earned citizenship, a path that includes passing a background check, paying taxes and a meaningful penalty, learning English, and going to the back of the line behind the folks trying to come here legally," President Barack Obama said Tuesday.

The United States has never declared English as its official language, though more than two dozen states have taken that step. Only one state ? Hawaii ? has adopted a second official language, naturally Hawaiian. Along the U.S.-Mexico border, there is sporadic use of Spanish and English for public affairs, but no state is considered officially bilingual. One Texas city, El Cenizo, adopted Spanish as its official language in 2006.

"With growing ethnic and racial diversity, we see more cases of people making suggestions about what should be the language of their local government," said Nestor Rodriguez, a sociology professor at the University of Texas at Austin. "These issues are always emotional and very symbolic. It's about who we are as people and who we are as a country."

Florida itself is an interesting case study: Miami-Dade County declared itself bilingual 40 years ago after a wave of Cuban exiles fled island and settled in South Florida. That ordinance was later overturned, but the rejection was thrown out in 1993. The state voted to make English the official language in 1988.

In Doral, nearly 80 percent of the population is Hispanic and almost 90 percent speak a language other than English at home. The city is affectionately known as "Doralzuela" because of its large number of Venezuelan residents.

Doral Mayor Luigi Boria, elected earlier this year, is a Venezuelan immigrant whose first language was Italian. He is an elegant, graying man who owns a successful computer technology business and speaks a halting English. He says he is still learning the language.

"Bueno, I think we have more than 80 percent of the population that already speak English and Spanish," he said in a telephone interview before Wednesday's vote. "I think what I'm doing is formalizing or regulating something that is already taking place."

He shared his own immigration story in introducing the resolution.

"It reminds me 23 years ago when I came to this country and I barely speak English and I made my way up," he told the audience of about 50 residents.

The resolution was largely symbolic; English would have remained the main language. But Boria argued that adopting Spanish as an official second language would help attract more business from Latin America and in turn create jobs. He noted Spanish has been used in Florida since St. Augustine was founded in 1565 ? 40 years before Jamestown, Va., the first permanent English settlement in the Americas.

"In Spanish, 'San Agustin,'" he said, pronouncing the city's name in Spanish.

The four city councilmembers, all Hispanic women whose families are from Mexico or Cuba, said they appreciated the spirit of the resolution but did not see its use. They highlighted the sizable number of Asian and Portuguese-speaking Brazilian immigrants in Doral as well.

Members of the audience who showed up to speak during public comments were almost equally divided between support and opposition.

"I learned the language, English," said Jaime Topp, a Cuban immigrant said. "That is the language of the United States."

He added that his wife, who doesn't speak Spanish, sometimes has trouble in Doral.

"There's times where she can't communicate," he said. "It's not right."

Ana Paola Cano, 30, who recently emigrated from Colombia, said she liked the resolution. She speaks English but felt more comfortable talking in Spanish, so the city clerk provided a translation ? as she did at several points in the meeting, highlighting the need for dual language services.

"It doesn't mean I don't believe we all need to learn English," she said. "It's a nice welcome to those of us who are recently arrived."

The measure was tabled but may be modified and brought before the council again at its next meeting.

"OK, if there's no support," Boria said, provoking laughter from the audience.

On Thursday, he vowed to continue working on the measure.

"I still believe it's good for the city," he said. "It will bring more business and investment and that will create more jobs in the city. At the end of the day English will always be the first official language."

Obama keeps faith in science and warns of cyber threats

It is our unfinished task to restore the basic bargain that built this country - the idea that if you work hard and meet your responsibilities, you can get ahead.

In adopting the phrase "unfinished task" as a signature motif for his 2013 State of the Union address, President Barack Obama signalled a return to familiar themes. For those who care about investment in science, that was a reassuring message.

The fight against global warming and the importance of technology to protect national security also got high billing. On the latter, Obama signaled that hacking skills, rather than kilotons, are increasingly a crucial currency, promising a new focus on combating cyberattacks - paralleled by negotiated cuts to the US nuclear arsenal.

In a combative speech designed to counter Republican opponents who want to cut the budget deficit by curbing spending on Obama's priorities - including education and research - the president made the case for continued investment in innovation.

Every dollar we invested to map the human genome returned $140 to our economy. Today, our scientists are mapping the human brain to unlock the answers to Alzheimer's; developing drugs to regenerate damaged organs; devising new material to make batteries 10 times more powerful. Now is not the time to gut these job-creating investments in science and innovation. Now is the time to reach a level of research and development not seen since the height of the space race.

The estimate of a 140:1 return on investment in genomics comes from a 2011 study by the Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio. While the precise numbers from that analysis have been questioned, the importance of continued innovation to the future economic competitiveness of the US has been stressed in multiple reports, notably from the US National Academies.

On Monday, The New York Times flagged negotiations with Russia to cut nuclear weapons stockpiles as a highlight of the coming speech. North Korea's nuclear test may have blunted Obama's rhetoric a little, but the pledge remained. Obama gave no specific numbers, but administration officials told the Times that the US arsenal could be cut from 1700 to 1000 weapons.

In the wake of recent hacking attacks against US media companies and others, Obama highlighted future threats to national security:

Now our enemies are also seeking the ability to sabotage our power grid, our financial institutions, and our air traffic control systems. We cannot look back years from now and wonder why we did nothing in the face of real threats to our security and our economy.

Obama called on Congress to pass new legislation to counter threats from hackers backed by hostile governments. That won't be easy: last year, a bill that would have demanded that companies meet minimum standards for cybersecurity, and report if they are attacked, foundered amid complaints that it would impose large costs on US businesses.

Iran converting some higher-grade enriched uranium to fuel: official

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran is converting some of its higher-grade enriched uranium into reactor fuel, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said.

"This work is being done and all its reports have been sent to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in a complete manner," Ramin Mehmanparast was quoted as saying on Tuesday by state news agency IRNA.

He was responding to a question on news reports that Iran has converted some of its 20-percent-enriched uranium into fuel for the Tehran Research Reactor, IRNA said.

Diplomats accredited to the IAEA in Vienna told Reuters that Iran had apparently resumed converting into fuel small amounts of higher-grade enriched uranium - a process which if expanded could buy time for negotiations between Washington and Tehran on its disputed nuclear program.

The possibility of Iran converting enriched uranium into fuel - slowing a growth in stockpiles of material that could be used to make weapons - is one possible way in which the nuclear dispute between Iran and the West could avoid hitting a crisis by the summer.

Tehran could otherwise have amassed sufficient stock by June to hit a "red line" set by Israel after which it has indicated it could attack to prevent Iran acquiring enough fissile material for a nuclear weapon.

Slacker reinvents itself: simpler, more approachable internet radio

Slacker redesign goes brighter and bolder as it moves to the mainstream

If you were a fan of Slacker's old-school black and gold aesthetic, you can mourn its passing today. The internet radio service has just undergone a rebirth, with a brand new white and burnt orange logo and a completely revamped design -- on web, mobile and Xbox -- in an effort to reintroduce itself to the mainstream and stave off competition from the likes of Pandora, Spotify and Rdio. The new look is decidedly simpler and more approachable, with a prominent search box and a distinct blue and white theme that carries its way throughout all interfaces. Indeed, the smartphone apps are explicitly designed to mirror the site, not just style-wise but functionally as well. For example, you can continue a song on the phone right where you left off in the browser.

The pricing structure remains the same -- there's a free ad-supported version, a Radio Plus $3.99 a month option and a $9.99 per month Premium plan. The new iOS and Android apps should be available today, with Windows Phone 8 and BlackBerry 10 versions to come. For more on the relaunch and a few thoughts from Slacker's execs, join us after the break.

Jaimie Etkin: 'Pretty Little Liars' Recap: Is Emily The New Spencer?

Note: Do not read on if you have not yet seen Season 2, Episode 19 of ABC Family's "Pretty Little Liars," titled "What Becomes of the Broken-Hearted."

pretty little liars recap

It's an odd day at Rosewood High. Not because one of the "Pretty Little Liars" has ditched school to play Hardy Girl, but a) because that "Pretty Little Liar" is former bookworm Spencer and b) because people (specifically the other three liars) are actually concerned about her absence. They're worried about Spencer and though Hanna thinks the best thing to do is leave Spencer alone (Chris Cocker-style), Aria says that's only landed her on "planet free fall." I imagine they play Tom Petty there all the time. Anyway, Emily says she's called TobAy but hasn't heard back -- probably because he's busy laundering a dozen black hoodies so he's ready for whatever Little Miss Riding Hood tells him to do next. If they want to know what happened, she surmises, they're going to have to get it out of Spencer. "Maybe I'll get some cupcakes and show up at her house later," Emily suggests, thinking Lucky Leo's could use some screen-time apparently.

Hanna and Aria agree and they say she needs to talk about the girl in the red jacket, who Hanna reveals she saw too, just before she went in for her interview with Corin, "the hot tested designer in Philly" a room full of white mannequins. But just before they can dissect, they see Spencer, wearing an awesome tiger/tribal cardigan that I covet talking to Andrew, who's been given "a dorky Rosewood haircut," my mom notes. And by talking, I mean ranting because she's been kicked off the academic decathlon team and she (obviously) points the finger at MonA.

"MonA, is there anything else that you want to take away from me," Spencer asks, getting up in the decathlon captain's face. Spence storms out of the courtyard, grabs her sunglasses from her locker and then realizes she can't see straight -- not only because she's losing it. Etched in the lenses is, "You rat out T, I take down 1 of your 3 -A." And with that, she's off. Screw the cupcakes, get this girl whatever she was kicking back in the Parentless Hastings Household the other night.

Creepy message aside, my mom can't get over Andrew's new look.

Mom: "Wait, so was that the same debate guy?"
Jaimie: "Yes! With the Rosewood haircut."
Mom: "What is wrong with their hairdresser? She hates the guys. She wants them all to look like losers."

Over at The Brew, Em is working for once and Hanna is busy "MapQuesting Amish Country" while Aria tries to figure out a way to get their "best friend ... chewing her elbows" a.k.a. Spencer back on the decathlon team. Aria tells Han that just because someone looks like their uncle it doesn't mean it's their dad. Wise words, Ms. Montgomery, but Caleb pretty much could not look less like Uncle Jamie. Their conversation get's interrupted when Aria's phone rings -- it's Ezra's mom. "Oh my god. Why is she calling me? We're not friends," Aria says in a hilarious panic. Turns out, Mrs. Fitz (who deserves another "f" name) just wants to know if Wes (a.k.a. Little Fitz) has been staying at Ezra's (a.k.a. Big Fitz) and like the title of this show suggests, she tells a pretty little lie. Speaking of lies, my mom insists "neither Fitz is big." It's all relative, Big Mama.

Suddenly, Cece shows up and sees Emily. "OMG. I never text you back," Cece says, using some awful grammar. She's worried about getting her store's website up when Emily asks if she knew Wilden, who they believe was in Cape May that summer. But Cece doesn't think that's proof enough since there were also about "four million other Delta Phis and they all wanted to rush Ali." She dismisses Em's theory and then calls her "hun" because she is the new Paige Michaelchuck.

Meanwhile, at the Parentless Hastings House, Spence is making what some (a.k.a. I) might call the most disgusting smoothie ever.

Jaimie: "Ewwwww, Spencer. I love a good pickle, but what the fuck."
Mom: "Vomit. I love a good health shake, but that is gross."

Then, there's a knock on the door. Saved by the Decathlete. She challenges him to a academic trivia match. Edit: a stripping academic trivia match in which one wrong answer means one article of clothing removed. "And the match isn't over til one of us is butt-naked," she says. "You're out of control," Andrew replies. "Not yet," she teases.

Andrew is down to his boxers and Spencer has just pulled a "Flashdance" move when Emily comes a-knockin', cupcakes in hand. When she sees what's going on, a tongue-tied Emily can only ask, "Should I've brought more cupcakes?" Easily one of my favorite moments of the season. He leaves, clothes in a heap in hand, and Emily basically asks Spencer what the #$@% that was about. She explains that she was trying to get Andrew to let her back on the decathlon team by showing him "my cupcakes," she explains.

Jaimie: "Why has Spencer had multiple scenes where she's being overtly sexually/acting like a prostitute?"?
Mom: "Spencer turned slut. Toby turned her into a slut."
Jaimie: "I think not. She's just running wild. Sidebar: I love that she's supposed to look like a mess and she's wearing what I wear to work everyday."

Emily takes the "cupcakes" comment as an opportunity to basically tears into Spencer: She wants to know what the hell happened with TobAy and why she's pushing all of them away. "You don't have a monopoly on pain," Em tells her. They don't want to watch her ... "Watch me what? Not be Spencer Hastings anymore? Because clearly, that's not working out for me," Spencer shouts before running up the stairs. "This is the new me!" I do miss the braids and riding boots.

Jaimie: "Emily is being a hard ass. A hard ass with cupcakes. Also, I'm really getting tired of them not knowing about TobAy."?
Lori: "Emily's hair looks so pretty."
Jaimie: "Yes, she IS pretty."
Lori: "Me too. But in the sunglasses, it said if she tells, A will get one of them. She is protecting them."
Jaimie: "Yes, but she didn't get that message in the last two episodes."
Lori: "Emily has turned into the old Spencer."
Jaimie: "And stripping is the new studying."

Over at Ezra's, Wes has made a mess of the place -- because, my mom says, "rich boy doesnt know how to clean up" -- and he needs to jet now that his mother knows he's there. (She barged in on him.) But he's banished from prep school and his brother's apartment so he's taking some cereal and going to stay a friend's house in Philly. Just as they discuss his plans, CeCe calls Aria and asks if she "still work[s] for that photographer." What photographer? That hasn't been a thing since October? Oh, but wait. Guess what? CeCe's in luck, because Aria is still gainfully employed by Laurel, that Annie Leibovitz wannabe we haven't seen since JULY. She's desperate for a photographer since the other guy she hired was a hack. Aria's up for the gig ... as long as she can bring an assistant, Wes.

Jaimie: "She's still working for a photographer?! WHAT!?!?"
Mom: "That's INSULTING!"

Apparently, Hanna had two hours after school to drive to Uncle Jamie's Woodwork-a-palooza. In a matter of a minute, Hanna pretty bluntly calls him out on being Caleb's dad, he confirms and then she asks him to try to make things right with his nephew son. He's game for coffee, but when she tells Caleb about it later that day, he is not exactly up for the caffeine-fueled idea, to say the least. "If it is true, that's even more reason for me not to meet him," Caleb says. She says she's doing this out of love and concern, but Caleb doesn't seem to care. "He had a lot of days where he could've made this choice, but he didn't," Caleb says sternly. "Instead, he let me grow up on my own. And that's where I am, I'm grown up and I'm on my own so I'm saying no."

Mom: "I don't get was Jamie with Caleb's aunt or mother. Or both."

Way to make this even creepier, Mom. Anyway, Emily has gone back to school because she just can't get away from her favorite space for learning. Just kidding. She goes to make things right with Jason, who's seemingly a full-fledged teacher now, but he's not buying Em's thought that Ali wasn't pregnant. Emily tells him about the photo and he remembers a collage that Ali gave Mr. DiLaurentis, which included a picture of Ali on a boat. Of course an older brother would remember the details of a collage his teenage sister made for their father. Anyway, he wonders, "Could be Walden's?" The possibility is strong enough that he decides to bring Em to his dad's new office where the collage probably is.

Over at the Parentless Hastings House, there's a Hastings besides Spencer! Melissa has inexplicably appeared to make Spencer some broccoli with lemon juice while their parents are in London. Suddenly, there's another inexplicable arrival: Wren is knocking at their back door. Both Hastings girls seemed shocked to see him. Melissa decides she wants no part in this and wants to enjoy her citrusy greens in peace. "I think I'll dine out back," she says, before seemingly walking into the bathroom. But back to Wren, who tells Spence, "I got a call from someone who is concerned about your state of mind." Was it Emily? Nope. Did Emily tell Hanna? Not to Wren's knowledge: It wasn't "any of them." Could really have been ... MonA? Spencer finally guesses and Wren can't deny it. She pretends to agree that it was "really thoughtful" of MonA to send him to check on her. But she doesn't want to talk -- she wants to get out of the PHH and suggests dinner and a movie. It's not a date though, Spencer clarifies. It's "a mental health outing" to a film festival by Bucknell, which is conveniently near Lewisburg, the same place that's hosting the academic decathlon. She goes upstairs to change as Wren smiles to himself about getting back in one Hasting's good graces.

At the Marin's, Hanna is about to head to her not-so-mentally-healthy outing with Jamie when Caleb walks in the door, hair tucked behind his ears and blue shirt buttoned all the way up to his neck.

Jaimie: "Caleb's hair is funny."
Mom: "His hair looks greasy. He's a sweetheart though. He got a haircut."
Jaimie: "It's like alternative meets classy."??
Mom: "it's like he wants it to still be long in the back, but boy cut in the front."
Jaimie: "That's called a mullet!"
Mom: "Oh nooo! Not on Caleb."

"I don't know if I'm going to be able to deal with this," Caleb tells Hanna, taking her hand, "but I know it's going to be a lot easier if you're with me." And off the go for the most awkward date I can imagine. Turns out, Caleb, Hanna and Jamie's evening is not so awkward because Jamie hasn't even showed. Hanna suggests they wait five more minutes because she thinks "he's not the same person." "Really?" Caleb replies. "Well, you can tell that to the empty chair." They try to pass the time with cake and just as they decide to get it to go, Jamie shows up. He jokes about the "used cake," prompted Hanna to say, "I would get you another piece, but if I stand up again, I'm going to have to pee and I would rather do that in my pants than leave you two alone."

Mom: "Uncle Jamie and Caleb don't even look related."
Jaimie: "He's really bothering me."
Mom: "Me too."
Jaime: "He's like, 'I suck' and then says, 'But please stay and listen to me.'"
Mom: "Hahaha. Hanna isn't even wearing any pants."

Over at CeCe's store, there's red win flowing in paper cups like it's water. CeCe sends Wes downstairs for some props.

Mom: "Little Fitz sounds like he has a British accent he's trying to hide."
Jaimie: "Because he does! What kind of 'Wizards of Waverly Place' fan are you?!"

CeCe takes the opportunity to ask Aria, "Is Big Brother as yummy as Little Brother? Ugh, lucky girl. You got two-for-one." I did not miss CeCe. Aria tells her it's not like that and is ready to put her photography skills to the test on baby Budda's with jeweled necklaces. CeCe steps out to get dinner and Wes and Aria continue working. She asks for more overhead lights and when he brings over a large lamp, he knocks wine all over the store's white shag carpet, a very color flooring for a store that people stomp around in all day.

Mom: "Wayyyyyy to go, Lil Fitz."

When Wes jokes about sleeping on the carpet to hide the stain instead of in his car, Aria realizes that he doesn't have a friend in Philly who doesn't eat breakfast to stay with. "Stay at my place," she suggests, but before they can get into it, CeCe calls. She says she had a glass or two of wine while picking up their food from the bar and when she came back, her car had been towed. Silly me, I actually thought she was going to get penalized for drinking and driving. Anyway, CeCe is sitting in her car the entire time, so clearly she's lying, but why?

Meanwhile, Jason and Emily arrive at his house to get the keys to Mr. DiLaurentis' office, which his son would obviously have a copy of. As they walk up to the deck, they see his pork covered in bottles of whiskey and it's clear someone is watching them dumfoundedly stare at the display. While Jason's pouring out bottles of liquor as any normal twentysomething would do, Emily gets a text: "Better tell him to save a couple. He might need it. -A"

When they get to Mr. DiLaurentis' office, they're surrounded by boxes and Emily can't seem to get the apparently threatening whiskey exhibition out of her head. She asks Jason who would do such a thing and immediately, he says, "Honestly, Alison. But I don't think she's visiting us from beyond the grave."

Mom: "What does Jason's dad do?"
Jaimie: "Abandon his family. Wait ... is Jason fake being nice to MonA or is he lying to Emily?"
Mom: "I think he's being fake-nice to MonA."
Jaimie: "I don't know about that."

Conveniently enough, third box is the charm and Em finds the highly-sought-after collage. Jason explains that the art project was an "apology" from Ali (ever the modest one) to her dad. Jason immediately locates the picture and they see there's a hand on Ali's shoulder so they peel it back and look who it is: Wilden. What luck that the collage was not only so easily discovered, but that the pictures weren't even glued down. Oh, and there's another side of the photo being hidden and on the other side of Ali is none other than CeCe. CeCe the girl who didn't remember Wilden when Em asked her about him just hours ago.

Suddenly, memories start flooding back to Jason. "Maybe she planned on meeting up with him that night," he tells Emily. "The last night my sister was alive." Suddenly, we flash back to the night we've seen both fictional and nonfictional snippets of for weeks and this time Jason is stumbling out of the DiLaurentis house. He goes to grab some water from the hose and sees Ali talking to Melissa, who we recently discovered was there that night thanks to Byron's flashback. (This may be the only thing I will ever thank Byron for.) Anyway, Jason calls out to Ali and when she finally turns around, it's CeCe talking to Melissa in that same yellow ruffled tank top. When Jason takes a second look, no one's there and then he passes out on a lawn chair.

Why didn't he ever tell the police about this, Emily wonders. He didn't want to be a suspect.

Meanwhile, Spencer and Wren finally arrive Lewisburg. She asks him to get a table at the inn-type establishment they've stepped into while she barges in on Team Rosewood's academic decathlon practice. After telling Andrew and the team's advisor off, she approaches MonA. "I really wanna thank you for sending the good doctor to my rescue," Spencer says sassily. It's almost scary what a great batshit bitch she's become. She also tells MonA he gave her a case study about a deeply disturbed teenager, who Wren refers to as M. "We both know that this sociopath goes by other initials as well," she says in MonA's face and threatens to upload the entire case study to the internet with MonA's photo attached.

"And who's looking cray-cray now, Spencer. Have you completely lost it? Is that was TobAy left you?" MonA says calmly. "Do you still have any friends, Spencer?"

And with that, Spencer goes full "Mean Girls" animal world on her, jumping on our teenage blackmailer and screamingly wildly. And as if we couldn't see and/or hear it on own own, one of ABC Family's uber-ridiculous Twitter prompts comes up on the screen: #SpencerSnapped. Wren pulls Spence off of MonA and the decathloners come to her rescue. "It's OK. It's fine. She just snapped. I'm OK," she says. Snapped. We get it. Thanks.

Mom: "Spencer was back being very all, 'I'll outsmart Mona,' and then she attacked her?? I don't like that they are making Spencer seem like she is unraveling."
Jaimie: "She IS unraveling. She's unraveled. She snapped! Did you not see?!"
Mom: "I want to smack Mona. She is so irritating. She should get with Byron -- he's irritating too. She is hard to take."
Jaimie: "I feel like she's so together now. It's unrealistic. Unless she was faking crazy to get into Radley for some reason?"
Mom: "She is on a lot of meds for crazy ppl."
Jaimie: "True, but still."
Mom: "It's not believable."

After the father-son-girlfriend coffee date proves successful, Hanna suggests to Ashley that Pastor Ted hire her potential father-in-law to fix the bell tower at the church. Is that still broken from when Ian died? How does anyone in Rosewood know what time it is? Anyway, apparently Pastor Ted (who we haven't seen since Halloween) moves fast because he and Jamie meet that night while Hanna and Caleb are waiting in the pews. Caleb's worried about Jamie's recommendations since he "got paid for his last job in weed." Eventually, he admits that he and Jamie agree that Hanna did the right. "He thinks I'm the luckiest person ever," Caleb tells her, leading to a sweet kiss.

Ashley comes out in her blue chiffon top, perfect for wintertime, and tells them that Jamie got the job. Time for pizza and beer!

Jaimie: "PIZZA & BEER?!"
Mom: "It sounds like Ashley wants a foursome."

Ew. Anyway, Hanna, feeling moved by the non-Christmas miracle that she witness that night, puts a $5 bill marked with some dice in the donation box. The camera stays on the etchings for so long, it's clear we'll be seeing them later.

Mom: "Question: What were Jamie and Pastor actually doing together? Paper work? Is Jamie adopting his own son?"
Jaimie: "He's just fixing the bell tower. I think you're looking too much into this slash giving this show too much credit."
Mom: "Ooooh ... He's the hunchback of Notre Dame in disguise."

Meanwhile, Jason and Emily head out of Mr. DiLaurentis' office, mission completed. But, not quite. The elevator gets stuck. I will never trust you, Jason. Ever.

Over in an equalled cramped space, Wren and Spencer are on their way home when Melissa calls. Wren answers and covers for Spencer and her brawl, saying she has a "gyppy tummy" (translation: "food poisoning") from their meal. What a guy. Another one I will never trust.

Mom: "Gyppy tummy?"
Jaimie: "I don't know. He's British. Whatever -- that's the least of my problems with this episode."
Mom: "I don't trust any guys on this show. I think Marlene King hates men."

Apparently, Byron's not home (or he is and decided to return to his old ways and stopped being a parent) so Aria is getting Wes ready for bed. They bond over books -- he can't fall asleep unless he reads -- and the literary chemistry is so strong that they're moved them to kiss. How very "Vampire Diaries," "Pretty Little Liars." Not even two seconds later, Aria says, "We can't do this." "No, no we can't," Wes replies. They say their goodnights and this time, I gotta agree with the hashtags prompt: #TheWrongFitz is right.

Mom: "OHHH. Smack him! Soooooo inappropriate!"
Jaimie: "That was."
Mom: "He deserved a slap."
Jaimie: "I don't even get romantic vibes between them."

Back in the elevator -- a far cry from other legendary on-screen elevator disasters like Zach Morris delivering Mr. Belding's wife's baby on "Saved By The Bell" or the one that led Joe Fox to see the light and dump Patricia in "You've Got Mail" -- Emily is trying to escape through a small opening and eventually, she lands safely on the ground. She says she'll hold the door open for Jason to escape, but doesn't seem to try very hard to hand over the reins. Suddenly, the doors shut. The elevator and Jason plummet to what should be death and I say "should" due to my detesting Jason and the physics of situation.

Mom: "It looked like he wasn't even trying to get out."
Jaimie: "It seemed like he purposefully shut the doors."
Mom: "I know. I agree."
Jaimie: "But it could just be because he's a bad actor."
Mom: "Yes. A bad actor with bad hair and his lips are so pale."

In a far happier place, the Marins and the Calebs order pizza and when the deliver man arrives, Jamie offers to pay. As he pulls out his cash, Hanna notices a $5 bill with dice doodled on it. Coincidence? She thinks not.

But no time to lament over stealing money from churches -- Hanna, Aria and Spencer get an "S.O.S." text from Emily, who's standing beside Jason's hospital bed as he struggles to drink some water in his brand-new neck brace. Jason says she was right about the NAT club -- someone wants him gone. And not only that, but the photo evidence with Wilden, Ali and CeCe was lost in the accident. A 4 x 6 shiny piece of paper didn't survive a multiple-story elevator crash? I'm shocked. She closes the curtain and goes to get him more water when she sees Hanna, Aria and soon, Spencer.

Magically, the other three liars knew that "S.O.S." meant Jason fell down an elevator shaft and we're at the hospital so they show up. Spencer, who's now estranged from her friends, seems the most considered and panicked, which isn't surprising considering Jason is her half-brother. She apologizes and so does Emily, but the kiss-and-make-up moment is interrupted when a nurse says, "Excuse me. Where's your friend?" They rush into his room and the only thing on the bed is wires and a neck brace. Jason's gone, but not in the way he should have been after an elevator accident.

Mom: "Oh come on. This is so stupid!"
Jaimie: "Sooooooo stupid."
Mom: "I'm starting to feel stupid for watching. That whole Jason thing was sooo lame."

As the credits roll, we see one pair of black gloves putting each of the girl's heads on bottles of whiskey. Then, another pair of gloves joins in to set up a game of spin the bottle. It lands on Spencer, they drink her whiskey (which sounds perverted) and then, they cheers. End scene. Is it supposed to be shocking that two members of the "A" Team were "seen" at once? Because we already know TobAy and MonA are members. If we saw five sets of gloves, that would have been something. But this?

Jaimie: "I feel like they tried to make it seem like it was this big surprise that there were two hoodies playing spin the bottle."
Mom: "Ummmm duh! Who could they be? I almost don't care."
Jaimie: "I know. This is frustrating me."
Mom: "So it seems like it was Mona and Toby bc we know they are A's. But now Melissa and Wren are in the picture and CeCe is weird as shit and the whole Jason thing is just ridiculous and insulting, not suspenseful at all. This better start to get better. I don't like to played with two weeks in a row."

Also, despite the shower scene hinted in the promo for next week's "Pretty Little Liars," I'm not too worried about Spencer being targeted. After all, last week, we saw Hanna's bobble head get torched and all things considered, I think Hanna had a pretty good week. Speaking of the promo, I'm looking forward to Spencer finally telling the other liars about TobAy. After all, after the etching in her sunglasses, we really haven't be given a reason for her to conceal that fact.

Quotes of the Night
"I think we'd know if Spencer was here. People would be running for cover." -Hanna

"I'm pretty sure when you and Caleb broke all, you locked yourself in your bedroom for two weeks and all you ate was eskimo pies." -Aria
"They were Skinny Cows and it was four days." -Hanna

"Give her a riddle. She needs to get that part of her brain working again." -Aria

"Why are you MapQuesting Amish Country?" -Aria

"Our best friend is at home chewing her elbows and you're horse shopping?" -Aria

"Busy?" -Andrew
"Yeah. I was just about to put out a welcome mat that says, 'Go Away!'" -Spencer

"Hanna. You didn't drive two hours for a show fly pie." -Jamie

"Holy crap. It's Emily Fields." -Andrew
"Relax. You're not her type." -Spencer

"It's just a cup of coffee. You can throw it on him if you want." -Hanna

"Dammit. I was really hoping for some shock therapy, but maybe you could just wire me to a toaster and press 'Top Brown Only.'" -Spencer

"Amen. I see the spirit has moved out. How would you guys like to take this to a more secular setting?" -Ashley

Also, thanks to one reader, Tanja, who noted that Spencer etched TobAy's name in the mausoleum to signify that he's dead to her in last week's episode. I buy it. New dark and twisted Spencer would.

"Pretty Little Liars" airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. EST on ABC Family.

Texas doctor honored during Black History Month

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) ? Dr. Marion Brooks' care for the African-American community reached far beyond its medical needs.

The trailblazing physician's clinic on Evans Avenue was not only the first and only option for residents in the black community; it also was the place where the community came for guidance on how to gain political and economic equality.

"He had the status and intelligence to stand up to a white-dominated society," said local community activist Eddie Griffin. "Not everyone had those kinds of guts. Those kinds of guts would land you in jail, or shot or worse."

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram (http://bit.ly/Z7V26n ) reports, as part of Black History Month, two rooms at the Lenora Rolla Heritage Center Museum are filled with medical equipment, congratulatory telegraphs, plaques and awards lauding the family's accomplishments and the indelible mark that Brooks left on Tarrant County.

Much of the memorabilia that makes up the museum exhibit was stored in the Brooks family home and has not been seen outside the home until now, said Roy Brooks, his son and Tarrant County commissioner. His father died in 2003 at the age of 83.

Characteristically, the elder Brooks liked to downplay the numerous awards he received and was even quoted in one Star-Telegram story describing his part in the civil rights struggle as "little bitty."

"I think he would describe his legacy as his five children and the thousands of other lives he touched because he lived and served and loved other people," Roy Brooks said.

Still, the reality is that in the 1960s Marion Brooks was a member of two groups ? the Black Panther Party for Self Defense and the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, or SNCC, that were seen by some as radical but by the African-American community in a more positive light.

The Black Panthers, founded in 1966, started out seeking to provide protection for people in African-American communities from police brutality but became involved in several high-profile confrontations with police.

SNCC (pronounced Snik) was a student-driven organization with a stated goal of gaining political and economic equality for African-Americans.

"My father was about supporting the community, and whenever he saw an organization going in that direction he would support them with his time and his money," his son said. "He really didn't care about what other people thought."

When Martin Luther King Jr. was leading a march on Washington for jobs and freedom on Aug. 28, 1963, Brooks was leading a march to the governor's mansion in Austin on the same day. He was accompanied by his five children, Roy Brooks said.

The general mood of Fort Worth in the 1960s was similar to other border and Southern cities, with anxiety and arguments about school desegregation and also residential desegregation, said Allan Saxe, political science professor at the University of Texas at Arlington.

Brooks was not a militant himself, but believed that the broader community needed to be pushed a little to get in line with the nationwide civil rights movement, Saxe said, which explains why he was sympathetic to the work being done by these two groups, even though it wasn't well-known.

"Dr. Brooks played an invaluable role in the desegregation movement and reached into both the African-American and broader white communities, which was not easily accomplished by others," Saxe said.

Brooks also did not shy away from standing up to federal authorities when he thought his civil rights were being challenged.

"My father used to tell stories about being accosted by the FBI while he was on his way to his clinic parking lot," Roy Brooks said. "He was not polite when he asked them to leave."

The physician's activism also spread through his medical practice.

A lot of the love the community had for Brooks was because of the efforts he made to mainstream health care in the African-American community. Brooks and his brother, Donald, opened a clinic on Evans Avenue that became the first and only health care option for many families, Griffin said.

"Dr. Jack (the elder Brooks' nickname) did a lot of medical work for free," Griffin said. "A lot of the people that he worked on were never able to pay him, ever. People would pay him when they could and how much they could. I pray for that family every morning."

Brooks delivered generations of babies in the African-American community, said Roy Brooks, who added that people still come up to him thanking him for the healing work his father did. Taken together and counting spouses, the Brooks family sired eight physicians.

The Sickle Cell Anemia Association of Texas was founded by Brooks, and he was a driving force in the creation of Tarrant County Precinct Council as well, Roy Brooks said.

The items in the museum are only an indication that his father passed this way and represent only a small part of his life, Roy Brooks said.

"He and my mom were married for 56 years, and the power of the family came from that love," Roy Brooks said.

"They were partners and worked as a team. None of the things that he accomplished could have ever been done without her."
