Andromeda Training Launches Visual Finance iPad App
Chapel Hill, NC (PRWEB) January 11, 2012
Andromeda Training, a business acumen training company with clients throughout the world, announces the launch of Visual Finance, an iPad app that visually delivers the key components necessary to analyze the financial health of a company.
Visual Finance shows the income statement and balance sheet in a single graphical representation, instantly showing the relationships between these key financial indicators. The unique visual picture helps make financial analysis quick and intuitive. The single-glance view is interactive: tap and see the numbers in the related financial statement, key ratios, or glossary definitions. Instead of paging back and forth, trying to compare complex numerical data, this simple, single picture gives the user an instant read on a company.
?In our business we see many people who have a fear of financial numbers. They look at financial statements and aren?t able to process the information in any meaningful way. The visualization methodology we use in Visual Finance makes it easy to see rather than calculate financial ratios,? said Eliza Helweg-Larsen, co-founder of Andromeda Training. ?It allows even the most finance phobic person to analyze a company?s financial health without having to rely on others to run the numbers for them.?
Robin Helweg-Larsen, co-founder of Andromeda Training added, ?Our company has been involved in helping people understand finance for over 20 years. The iPad seemed like a natural fit for us and a way that we could bring the financial visualization we use in our Income Outcome business acumen training workshops to a whole new audience. Visual Finance is an intuitive and natural way of comparing and prioritizing data whether you?re a stock market investor, a salesperson looking at clients, or a manager trying to develop a big picture of the company.
?Chapel Hill based Four Clouds, LLC developed the app for us. They were great to work with and provided insights and suggestions that improved the final product.?
Visual Finance is free to download at the iTunes App Store and the iPad App Store. Upgrading to the full version allows users to look at the current and past annual financial reports for over 450 of the world?s top companies, including most of the Fortune 500

Rights group calls on West to end 'Arab exception' (AP)
CAIRO ? Popular uprisings sweeping the Arab world exposed biases by Western governments that supported Arab autocratic rulers for the sake of "stability" while turning a blind eye to their repressive policies, Human Rights Watch said Sunday.
The New-York based group urged democratic governments to adopt persistent and consistent support for peaceful protesters and to press both autocratic rulers and newly emerging democracies to avoid intolerance and seeking revenge.
"The events of the past year show that the forced silence of people living under autocrats should never have been mistaken for popular complacency," HRW's executive director Kenneth Roth said. "It is time to end the 'Arab exception.'"
The Arab Spring revolts began in Tunisia in late 2010 and quickly spread to Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Syria and Bahrain, deposing or challenging authoritarian rulers as citizens who long seemed incapable or unwilling to rise against decades of repression took to the streets in a stunning awakening.
In some ways, the unexpected uprisings amounted to a slap to the United States and other Western governments, which had supported autocratic regimes that served as bulwarks against Islamists hostile to the West and appeared to offer stability in a volatile region.
Western governments also have been accused of being selective in supporting the protesters, with NATO airstrikes proving key to the ouster of slain Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi. Meanwhile, the West has stood largely on the sidelines amid continued crackdowns in Bahrain, Yemen and Syria.
"The people driving the Arab Spring deserve strong international support to realize their rights and to build genuine democracies," Roth said in the group's annual report, which covers some 90 countries. He added that the Arab world is in a "transformative moment," and it will not be an easy one.
Human Rights Watch pointed to five main issues that dominated the relationship between Western governments and their Arab autocratic friends: the threat of political Islam, the fight against terrorism, support for Israel, protection of the oil flow and cooperation in stemming immigration.
Even after the leaders of Egypt, Libya and Tunisia were toppled, Western governments remained hesitant to lean too hard on other shaky authoritarian leaders, the group said.
As an example, the watchdog group singled out the United States, saying it has been reluctant to "press Egypt's ruling military council to subject itself to elected civilian rule," nearly a year after the country's longtime leader was ousted following an 18-day uprising.
Roth acknowledged Western governments were re-evaluating their policies as new governments emerge in the region, but said changes have been selective.
"The West has not put Bahrain under pressure, and other monarchs, to carry out reforms," he told The Associated Press in an interview ahead of the report's release in Cairo.
The organization also blamed the Western hesitation in part on the ascendence of political Islam in most of the countries that witnessed the fall of their autocratic rulers like Egypt, Libya, and Tunisia.
HRW urged the West to recognize that Islamists are the "majority preference," while keeping pressure on the emerging new governments to respect human rights, especially regarding women and religious minorities.
Roth was cautious when asked about concerns about potential human rights violations under Islamist rule, particularly in Egypt where the Muslim Brotherhood and ultraconservative Salafis won a majority of seats in the first post-Hosni Mubarak parliament.
He said the Muslim Brotherhood has been "saying the right things" but "we have to see how they govern and how they deal with women, religious minorities. These are the big questions."
The popular uprisings also have alarmed other repressive regimes such as China, Zimbabwe, North Korea, Ethiopia, Vietnam, and Uzbekistan, where rulers were worried about facing similar fates. The group said China and Russia in particular acted "obstructionist," using their veto power at the U.N. security council to halt pressure on Syria to stop killings of protesters.
Saudi Arabia also continues to discriminate against its citizens and workers, according to HRW, which said 9 million women, 8 million foreign workers and 2 million Shiite citizens are either suppressed or lacking rights in the country.
"As we mark the first anniversary of the Arab Spring, we should stand firmly for the rights and aspirations of the individual over the spoils of the tyrant," Roth said.
Outside the Arab world, the last year has not witnessed significant progress in countries with poor human rights records, including China and North Korea, according to the report.
Corruption, poverty and repression still prevail in Equatorial Guinea, the tiny, oil-rich nation off the western coast of Africa, which has been ruled by Africa's longest-serving ruler Teodoro Obiang Nguema since he seized power in a 1979 coup, the group said.
Eritrea continues to be governed by "one of the world's most repressive governments," and its citizens are subjected to torture, detentions, restrictions on freedom of speech, HRW said.
It also cited Colombia, saying armed conflict in the South American country has displaced millions while paramilitary groups with ties to the security apparatus are on the rise.
Cuba, HRW said, remains "the only country in Latin America that represses virtually all forms of political dissent."
The group also claimed that even member states of the European Union have violated human rights through restrictive asylum and migration policies.

Alexander Adler: The Weight of Neshat
Shirin Neshat's latest series of photographs presented along with a video installation at Gladstone Gallery perpetuate her study of the underlying conditions of power within socio-cultural structures in the Middle East. Born in Qazvin, Iran before immigrating to the United States in 1974, Neshat's artistic practice has focused on the plight of women in oppressive, Muslim societies. Addressing the Arab Spring and the momentum of these uprisings, Neshat turned to historical and contemporary sources to create technically beautiful and richly provocative photographic portraits.
The exhibition's title, The Book of Kings, stems from the ancient Shahnameh (The Book of Kings), an epic tragedy written by the Persian poet Ferdowsi between c. 977 and 1010 AD. The Book of Kings recounts the mythical and historical past of Greater Iran from the creation of the world until the Islamic conquest of Persia in the 7th Century.
Each photograph appears inscribed with Neshat's signature calligraphic texts and drawings over each subject's face and body drawn from Shahnameh as well as from contemporary poetry by Iranian writers and prisoners vying against authoritarian rule.
While the work conveys little conceptual deviation from previous series, the aesthetic beauty of each silvery print and the raw emotion garnered from each sitter remains resolutely powerful.
The Book of Kings will be on exhibition from January 13-February 11 at Gladstone Gallery (515 West 24th Street).

Satellite observes spatiotemporal variations in mid-upper tropospheric methane over China

Atmospheric methane (CH4), one of the main greenhouse gases, has increased dramatically worldwide since the pre-industrial era. However, much work is needed to build on intermittent and scattered observations since the 1960s and systematic study since the 1980s. Since 1983, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has coordinated global in-situ measurement of methane. Quantification of methane emissions still has large uncertainties, mainly because of undersampling over most regions of the globe by surface observation networks. In particular, spatiotemporal variations of mid-upper tropospheric methane in China are not well understood, because of limited in-situ measurements.
Dr. ZHANG Xingying and his group at the National Satellite Meteorological Center of the China Meteorological Administration tackled this problem using satellite observations. Using Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) methane data from 2003 to 2008, they revealed spatiotemporal variations of mid-upper tropospheric methane in China.
Their study shows that in the mid troposphere, a center of low CH4 concentration is located over western China, attributable to minimal industrial and agricultural activity. The lowest CH4 mixing ratio in the upper troposphere is over southern China, related to atmospheric transport from the ocean.
A seasonal cycle of methane has been discovered. One peak in summer and the other in winter over eastern, northeastern and northwestern China. Only one peak (in summer) occurs over southern and western China.
Before 2007, CH4 mixing ratio was nearly stable. The average mixing ratio during the last 6 years over major northern hemispheric countries is similar. However, there has been a significant increase in tropospheric CH4 concentrations after 2007 in most northern hemispheric areas, with slightly larger increases over China.
Dr. ZHANG Xingying has stated that the trend of CH4 based on satellite observation is still somewhat uncertain, because of the short, 6-year dataset. More satellite data of higher quality are needed for further trend analysis.
To understand the profile of methane in China and provide data for validation of satellite products, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) measurements were made at a ground-based hyperspectral remote sensing laboratory at the National Satellite Meteorological Center. A Bruker FTIR instrument (IFS 120 M, made in Ettlingen, Germany) with 0.008 cm-1 spectral resolution, was used for observations. Several years of data have been collected.
Implementation and promotion of this work will publicize methane spatiotemporal variations and their potential sources. In so doing, informed efforts may be mounted to reduce methane emission and resulting global climate change.
The National Satellite Meteorological Center manages satellite climate products in China. Two payloads for greenhouse gas monitoring are in development for the next satellite. One of the payloads is similar to AIRS for mid-upper tropospheric greenhouse gases. The other is for low tropospheric greenhouse gases, and uses a near-infrared (NIR) spectrometer. Meanwhile, more in-situ measurements have been carried out in China for more detailed investigation of greenhouse gases.
Dr. XIONG Xiaozhen, an expert from NOAA, is in charge of AIRS methane product retrieval. He believes that this study is the first to use satellite data for analyzing mid-upper tropospheric methane over China, and represents important step in the study of climate change.

US considering closing embassy in Syria (AP)
WASHINGTON ? The State Department said Friday it "may have no choice" but to close the U.S. embassy in Damascus and remove all US personnel from the country wracked by a 10-month revolt against the regime of President Bashar Assad unless Assad's government takes extra steps to protect the mission.
The department issued a statement late Friday noting that the Obama administration has "serious concerns about the deteriorating security situation in Damascus, including the recent spate of car bombs and about the safety and security of embassy personnel."
The uprising against Assad has killed an estimated 5,400 people since March. Although the revolt began with mostly peaceful protests, an increasingly strong armed element has developed, and many people are now fighting the regime.
The department said the administration has asked Syria to take additional security measures to protect the U.S embassy and that the Syrian government "is considering that request."
But it also said it warned Assad's government that "unless concrete steps are taken in the coming days we may have no choice but to close the mission."
The U.S. removed its ambassador to Syria, Robert Ford, from Damascus in October over security concerns. He returned to Syria in December.
The administration argued at the time that Ford's presence in Syria was important for advancing U.S. policy goals by meeting with opposition figures and serving as a witness to the ongoing violence.
The Obama administration has long called for Assad to step down, and officials say his regime's demise is inevitable.
U.S. officials say Syria has become increasingly isolated, with Iran as one of its last remaining allies, and point to recent defections by some military and government leaders as a sign that Assad's grip on power is unraveling. The 10-month uprising against Assad has turned increasingly militarized and chaotic as more frustrated regime opponents and army defectors arm themselves and fight back against government forces.

Sinead O'Connor seeks help for depression
After crying out for psychiatric help last week, Sinead O'Connor is now doing something to get herself out of the doldrums.
The Irish hitmaker revealed on Twitter yesterday that she's checking into a hospital for two weeks to be treated for depression.

"Gonna be off radar for few weeks. But will be back. Worry not. : )," O'Connor first tweeted on Monday concerning her current condition.
On Tuesday, the 45-year-old singer subsequently confirmed where she was headed--to a medical center where she can get the care she's needed ever since the very public end of her short-lived marriage to teen drug counselor Barry Herridge. It also comes on the heels of her plea for help on Twitter in which she told fans she was very unwell, in "serious danger" and needed to get back on meds.
"Im going to hospital. Treatment for depression. Not at all well. But they will put me back together quick," she said in a reply to one follower. "@twintiermedia so will be back.. and smiling. Prolly 2 weeks ish.."

O'Connor added that it was the "right decision."
"They [have a] fab good team," she wrote. "I be me again in 2 weeks they say."
Allaying fans' fears, she concluded, "Don't want anyone worrying. Should only worry if a depressed person DOESN"T go hospital. All will be well. Just little time. : )"
The tweets follow a long, rambling confessional the "Nothing Compares 2 U" crooner posted over the weekend on her website in reply to one reporter's inquiry into "mental health perceptions in Ireland and my self."

Judging slump? Fatigue? 5 big 'Idol' questions
In the confession, O'Connor called her native country a "very messed up place" when it comes to treating depression routinely with drugs as opposed to analyzing a person's emotional state.
MORE: Sinead O'Connor's Marriage Over in 18 Days? Not So Fast
"Many people really are just crying out for a lot of love. Drugs don't fix that," the Grammy winner opined, adding that she's been routinely misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder when in reality she suffered from severe post-traumatic stress disorder "as a result of my upbringing."
O'Connor also admitted to having "had a baby for someone else's husband," which messed her up even more.
"The father didn't want to know about the child and I was suicidally depressed 5 months after having me beautiful boy," she said.
O'Connor noted that she "always found it an enormous obstacle being "Sinead O'Connor" when seeking medical help. Often misdiagnosed, or just derided or lectured like a child.. not heard."
We're glad Sinead's finally getting the attention she needs.

Cell senescence does not stop tumor growth
Since cancer cells grow indefinitely, it is commonly believed that senescence could act as a barrier against tumor growth and potentially be used as a way to treat cancer. A collaboration between a cancer biologist from the University of Milano, Italy, and two physicists, from the National Research Council of Italy and from Cornell University, has shown that cell senescence occurs spontaneously in melanoma cells, but does not stop their growth, which is sustained by a small population of cancer stem cells. The results, published in the open-access journal PLoS Computational Biology on January 19 explain why it is difficult to treat cancer cells by inducing senescence alone.
The work explores the relationship between melanoma and senescence, the normal process where cells decline and eventually stop duplicating after reaching maturity. The investigators followed the long-term evolution of melanoma cell populations, monitoring the number of senescent cells. After three months, growth slowed and most of the cells turned senescent, however growth did not stop and eventually resumed its initial rate until the senescent cells had almost disappeared.
The authors mathematically modeled the experimental data using the cancer stem cell hypothesis, where a sub-group of cancer cells replicate indefinitely, and are thus unaffected by senescence. These cancer stem cells give rise to a larger population of cancer cells that can duplicate only a finite number of times. The model yielded an indirect confirmation of the presence of cancer stem cells in melanoma, an issue that is still controversial in the cancer research community.
Although a large fraction of cancer cells are susceptible to senescence, the researchers conclude that inducing senescence is unlikely to provide a successful therapeutic strategy because these cells are irrelevant for tumor growth. However, the indirect evidence of cancer stem cells in melanoma may enable the development of new methods to treat specific kinds of cancer. The challenge will be in the strong resistance to drug induced senescence that would be found in the cancer stem cells. Along this line of research, treatment of tumors would focus on targeting only these cancer stem cells, rather than every single cancerous cell.

Behind the Conflicting Headlines: What do the Results of Trials of Avastin for Ovarian Cancer Actually Show?
Last month the results of two trials into the use of a drug called Avastin (also known as bevacizumab) for ovarian cancer were published. Confusingly, different media outlets have reported the results very differently. The Daily Mail and The Huffington Post UK reported it as a positive news story: "New drug can slow progress of ovarian cancer by up to six months" . In contrast, other outlets, such as in The Huffington Post Canada, said the results were disappointing. Since then, the drug has received approval from the European Medicines Agency for treating ovarian cancer.
Why did journalists interpret the results so differently? It seems to be down to whether the writer focused on how long the drug delays the tumour getting worse, or how long the drug increases life expectancy. It also depends upon which of the various analyses described in the trial results publications the writer focuses on.
Both the trials showed that adding Avastin to chemotherapy delays the tumour getting worse, which is good news. The trial carried out in the US (called GOG218) included only patients with advanced disease. They found that, on average, the drug delayed the tumour getting worse by four to six months. The other trial, led by the UK Medical Research Council (called ICON7), included a much broader range of women with ovarian cancer. In fact, two thirds of them had less advanced disease than those in GOG218. The ICON7 trial found that Avastin delayed the tumour getting worse by around two months. This increased to six months for women who had advanced disease.
It is currently less clear whether Avastin increases life expectancy. The GOG218 trial did not find that Avastin helped women with ovarian cancer to live for longer. However, the design of this trial meant that it was unlikely to be able to look at life expectancy. This is because many women in the control arm of the trial, who were not intended to receive Avastin, received it as part of their further treatment after their tumour got worse again. This could have masked any difference between the control group and the women who received Avastin as part of the trial.
The ICON7 trial should be able to tell us whether Avastin increases life expectancy, once the final results are analysed. However, not enough time has passed since women were given the drug to be able to draw any accurate conclusions yet. From the data currently available, it looks as though Avastin may increase the life expectancy of women with advanced disease by about eight months. But we still need to confirm this with longer-term data.
So we can't yet reliably say that Avastin does or does not increase life expectancy. We won't know whether this is true or not until the final results of the ICON7 trial are ready in 2013. What we can say now is that for women with advanced disease, the increase in life expectancy seen in the ICON7 trial is very encouraging. Avastin is the most promising new drug for treating ovarian cancer in more than 15 years. Nevertheless, we need to wait a little longer (until next year) to be sure. Before we change how all women with ovarian cancer are treated, we need to know more about who will benefit the most from Avastin.
We urgently need to improve how women with ovarian cancer are treated. I hope that further results from the ICON7 trial that are due out over the next year or so will bring us the knowledge to do this.
This blog was written on behalf of the Medical Research Council Clinical Trials Unit and the Chief Investigators of the ICON7 trial.

NBC planning show for Betty White's 90th birthday (AP)
PASADENA, Calif. ? Betty White says her plans for her upcoming 90th birthday might include "a little vodka on the rocks."
The tireless actress's big day on Jan. 17 seems to be exciting others more than her. NBC is airing a birthday special for White the day before and has picked up a "Candid Camera"-like prank show featuring senior citizens called "Betty White's Off Their Rockers."
"I didn't accomplish anything," White said Friday. "It just came up on me. I'm blessed with good health."
NBC has not yet put "Off Their Rockers," which White would host, on the schedule. White said she's on hand to make sure producers don't make any of the humor mean-spirited. In most of the cases, young people are the butt of the show's jokes.
"It's the reverse psychology of the `poor old seniors,'" White said. "We've got a sense of humor, too, warped as it may be."

Android Market hits 400,000 applications, says analytics firm
Google's Android Market has hit an important milestone, according to analytics firm Distimo.
The mobile application marketplace now has 400,000 available programs, according to Distimo. Out of that, two-thirds of the available applications are free, jumping from 60 percent last April
It's important to point out that Distimo is not the official word on available Android apps--Google is. And so far, the search giant has not immediately responded to CNET's request for confirmation of Distimo's report.
If Distimo's estimate is true, it would put the Android Market within striking distance of Apple's App Store, which currently leads the pack with over 500,000 available applications. Whether or not Google's marketplace will be able to catch up to the App Store, however, remains to be seen, since, as Distimo points out, the Android Market needed two more months to hit 400,000 available apps than did Apple's App Store.
But application store success goes far beyond available programs. Last month, Google announced that its Android Market had reached 10 billion downloads since its launch in 2008. Even better, both Google's store and Apple's App Store had a strong ending to 2011, with Android- and iOS-based device owners downloading 1.2 billion apps during the last week of the year, alone, according to research firm Flurry Analytics.
Google and Apple aren't the only companies to hit important app store milestones lately. Last week, Microsoft blog All About Windows Phone found that the Windows Phone Marketplace has now hit 50,000 available applications. Microsoft's store reached 40,000 apps in November.

Is Keith Olbermann feuding with Current TV? (omg!)
NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - What's going on between Keith Olbermann and Current TV?
Olbermann is not covering the Iowa caucus Tuesday night -- and it doesn't look like the decision was his alone.
Earlier Tuesday, Olbermann indicated that his show "Countdown" was returning, but by 7 p.m. ET, he said it was not to be.
"So as not to mislead: I am informed Countdown will not be on tonight," Olbermann tweeted. "I must defer on all questions to @JoelHyatt @AlGore and @Current."
Instead, Gore is on air alongside his two other prime time hosts, Cenk Uygur and Jennifer Granholm. Current's Chief News Officer and on-air visage is MIA.
These mixed signals come amid reports of tension between Olbermann, who has fought his way off networks before, and Current.
As the New York Times' Brian Stelter wrote last Thursday, Olbermann's involvement in the election so far -- or lack thereof -- is puzzling. He did not appear in a pair of special reports that followed GOP candidate debates.
"These absences suggest that there may be new tension between Mr. Olbermann and the managers at Current, who are trying to create a progressive-oriented cable news channel," Stelter wrote.
Olbermann responded with an extended tweet claiming that "anybody who describes my disposition towards Current as "disgruntled" is either uninformed, working from a personal agenda, wrong -- or all of the above."
But the fact remains that Olbermann is off and his prime time cohorts are in.
Olbermann says he's back tomorrow, but the real back story is anybody's guess.

Romney swipes Santorum for time spent in DC (Daily Caller)
ATLANTIC, Iowa ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney took a subtle swipe Sunday at rival Rick Santorum for being a Washington insider during a campaign stop at a local diner.
?I can tell you that our backgrounds are quite different,? Romney said in response to a question from a reporter at the Family Table Restaurant. ?Like Speaker Gingrich, Senator Santorum has spent his career in government in Washington.?
?Nothing wrong with that,? he said. ?It?s a very different background than I have.?
Romney?s willingness to differentiate himself from Santorum shows how fellow 2012 presidential contenders are taking the former Pennsylvania senator?s recent surge in the Hawkeye State seriously.
The Des Moines Register released a poll Saturday showing Santorum rising from the back of the pack into third place in Iowa. The caucuses ? the first nominating contest of the 2012 election ? are set for Tuesday across Iowa.
Romney, a former business executive and governor of Massachusetts, went on to say that ?the people of this country recognize that with our economy as the major issue we face right now, it would be helpful to have someone who understands the economy first hand.?
He also said Santorum is a friend who ?was kind enough to endorse me last time around.?
?I wouldn?t be surprised if we see him do well on Tuesday night,? he said.
Dozens of reporters and Iowans packed into the restaurant to hear Romney, who arrived at the event with his wife in his campaign bus.

Going Green! Monster Energy rages off the line to start the Dakar Rally!
When much of the United States awakens from a night of revelry and tunes into a solid day?s worth of football, some of the world?s top off-road racers will already be tearing across the Argentinean countryside in what?s been called the most grueling test of man and machine in the world ? the 33rd running of the Dakar Rally.
And, of course, Monster Energy is right in the thick of things at Dakar, fielding two teams ? the Monster Energy X-raid Team and the Monster Energy-backed Husqvarna Rallye Team by Speedbrain - in hopes of conquering this most global mega motorsports contest!
?
?
Opening with the Monster Energy X-raid Team and the five colorful MINI ALL4 Racing vehicles and three BMW X3 CC entries, the 96-man team will pursue/support drivers led by French endurance off-road legend Stephane Peterhansel ? a nine-time winner at Dakar (six motorcycle title, three auto). Joining Peterhansel under the Monster Energy banner at Dakar will again be Polish great Krzysztof Holowczyc ? a seven-time Dakar Rally combatant/5th at Dakar last year, along with Russian FIA World Cup Cross Country great Leonid Novitskiy and 2004 motorcycle class Dakar champion Joan Roma.
Passing scrutineering on Saturday at Plaza Colon in Mal del Plata?s downtown area, the Monster Energy X-raid Team was introduced to the sizeable Argentinean crowed to great fanfare ? with the Monster Energy brand and iconic logo being a big hit with the local crowd.
On the Husqvarna TE 449 RR dirt bikes Monster Energy?s led by Portugal?s Paulo Goncalves, Spanish greats Joan Barreda and Jose Manuel Pellicer, along with local Brazilians Ike Klaumann and Ze Helio. Although the bikes don?t run the same course as the cars, they will cover the same 14 stages and 8,391 kilometers from the Argentinean coast across the Andes through Chile and up to Peru?s capital city, Lima.
?
?
Dakar Stage 1 Update ?(Monster Energy X-raid takes (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 11th and 13th)
Stage 1 Update: Although the likelihood of a Mini win was obvious to even the least knowledgeable of pundits, the identity of the winner is slightly surprising. The length of today?s stage means that performances here are not too representative, but Leonid Novitskiy exploited his best driving skills to seize his first special stage win at the Dakar. The 2011 Rally Raid World Champion started 13th and pipped his teammates Krzysztof Holowzyc and St?phane Peterhansel at the finishing line, besting them by 5" and 9" respectively. At the end of the day, X-Raid has three Minis at the top of the classification, ahead of Giniel de Villiers, who posted a strong performance in the Dakar debut of his Toyota Hilux.

MERRIMACK, N.H. (AP) ? The political world shifts 1,300 miles east later this week.
And the end of Tuesday's Iowa presidential caucuses will give way a day later to a very different contest in New Hampshire, thrusting a new set of faces, issues and political challenges onto the Republican presidential contest.
Abortion will yield to taxes and budget deficits. And then there's something known locally as the curse of the front-runner.
"I don't think Iowa's going to have much influence on New Hampshire either way, truthfully," said Sen. Kelly Ayotte, one of Mitt Romney's most prominent New Hampshire supporters. "I think they probably don't like to hear it, but that's the reality."
Iowa and New Hampshire voters are more likely to be white and better educated than the national average. But the similarities end there.
Where a relatively small group of conservative activists usually dominate the Iowa Republican caucuses, the nation's first Republican primary on Jan. 10 is open to a broad spectrum of voters: tea party activists, moderates and left-leaning independents alike. That means who you see and what they say on the campaign trail will likely change.
Romney is considered the overwhelming favorite in New Hampshire, where Ron Paul also enjoys a passionate following. And former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, the only candidate skipping the Iowa caucuses, is lying in wait in the first-in-the-nation primary state.
While the state of the race here today likely will change with the Iowa result, New Hampshire voters delight in upsetting the conventional wisdom. Chalk it up to the state's fierce independent streak, but pre-primary poll leaders have had mixed success over the years.
Indeed, an Iowa Republican caucus winner has never won a contested New Hampshire presidential primary in the modern era.
The New Hampshire political terrain is so different than Iowa, where influential evangelicals dominate, that some Republicans already are bypassing the state.
Perry plans to head straight from Iowa to South Carolina, the site of the subsequent contest. Bachmann's campaign reports similar plans, while Santorum hasn't been active in New Hampshire for months.
New Hampshire is the second least religious state in the nation, according to a 2008 Gallup poll. And Republican voters here are much more likely to support abortion rights and gay marriage than their partisan friends elsewhere.
Look no further than Mike Huckabee, the former pastor who soundly defeated Mitt Romney in the Iowa Republican caucus four years ago. Huckabee would finish a distant third in New Hampshire on his way to fading from the nomination contest ultimately won by the New Hampshire primary victor, Arizona Sen. John McCain.
"A candidate who can win here is probably more likely to be able to win the general election," said University of New Hampshire pollster Andy Smith. "It's not political activists who determine who wins in New Hampshire. It's regular old voters."
The distinction is a source of pride of sorts in New Hampshire, where former governor and prominent Romney backer John H. Sununu long ago coined the phrase, "Iowa picks corn, while New Hampshire picks presidents."
This year could be different.
Polling suggests that Romney could win both.
Despite finishing second here four years ago, he's the overwhelming frontrunner in New Hampshire. The former governor of a neighboring state, he has devoted more time and energy here than anywhere else. And with his opponents splintering the anti-Romney vote in Iowa, recent polling suggests that Romney's also positioned to do very well there.
"If he wins Iowa and New Hampshire, this could be a quick contest," said Steve Duprey, a New Hampshire member of the Republican National Committee.
Romney has another advantage. Unlike some rivals, his message has been remarkably consistent wherever he goes.
"The strategy doesn't change at all," top Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom said. "The Number 1 issue is jobs and the economy. That's what they care about in Iowa, that's what they care about in New Hampshire and every place else."
It's a similar situation for Texas Rep. Paul, a libertarian favorite who has won a passionate following based largely on his anti-government, anti-tax, and anti-spending message. That's a message that plays well in New Hampshire and has become a rallying cry for Republicans across the nation.
The shift to New Hampshire also brings new attention to Huntsman, the former ambassador the China, who is betting his candidacy on a strong New Hampshire finish. It was a strategy driven by Huntsman's moderate appeal. New Hampshire allows independents to vote in its Republican contest.
But amid the shifting faces and messages, New Hampshire has offered one lesson over the years: Expect the unexpected ? for the next week or so, anyway.
And then it's on to South Carolina.
